Labor Day
I was born on labor day. The year I was born it was between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. It was the same way for my Bar Mitzvah – Hitler invaded Poland, where all my Dad’s family was that day in 1939.
My Treasure
“We had a long hard road to home but we survived together and we’re strong together. I wish the same for you. Someone you treasure.”
The Piano Teacher
Her great granddaughter’s painting. A box her son made by hand. An award for her volunteer work as a piano teacher. She shows me a selfie with Jeb Bush to demonstrate the power of taking initiative and getting what you want out of life. “I’m fearless” she says.
Now Or Never
A string of beads from a childhood friend who became a lifelong support. An embroidered pocket from a relative who took her in at a difficult time at home. A cookie which gave her the message in German: “Now or never” and directed her to get married to the love of her life. Two hearts.
Statement of Purpose
The idea is simple: visit with a senior and invite them to tell me about three objects which hold significance to them. “Three Pieces of Me.” The interviews will be recorded and reported here with edits by me and an accompanying photograph.
